THAKEHAM  VILLAGE  DAY SATURDAY 19TH JUNE

Once again I believe this years Village Day should be another great occasion to mark our local community spirit, enjoy a day out with all the family and raise much needed funds!

This years' Village Day is repeating the successful formula of the last 3 years and we are very happy to be hosting the fourth South Downs Strongman Challenge competition – see below for more details.

Village Day is about celebrating the values of tradition and community and there are a wide range of stalls and games for you to test your luck and skill, and maybe even win a prize or two! Other attractions will also be taking place in the main arena throughout the afternoon, including performances by Thakeham First School and our very own Thakeham Morris, and also a Karate display.  In our second arena we will be holding a fun dog show throughout the afternoon.  Another favourite, returning again this year, is the musical accompaniment provided by the Petworth Town Band, who will be playing for most of the afternoon.

Now for the third year running, we will be continuing into the evening with live music provided by two Sussex based bands.  The evening will kick off with young local talent “Left Over Right” and will be followed by the excellent “Wishful Thinking”, as they play their mix of Rock, Pop and Blues from the fifties to the nineties.

I couldn’t end any introduction to our event without recognising all the hard work, effort and support which goes into making our day happen.  Whilst it would be impossible to name everyone individually, on behalf of everyone who enjoys and benefits from the day and personally from myself, thank you!

Thakeham Village Day 2011

Village Day is an independently organised event which relies on the good will and support of local people to make it happen.  We have once again struggled to get new people involved in the preparations, which start much earlier in the year.  Unfortunately I do believe Thakeham Village Day 2011 might not happen unless more people come forward.  If you would like to get involved with next years event we’d love to hear from you!

The South Downs Strongman Challenge 2010

Now being run for the fourth time and building on the success of the last three years we hope 2010 will be the best yet!

With a familiar mix of 6 events, it is likely that this year the battle for the title will be the closest yet.  This year also sees more locally based lifters taking part so hopefully we might have our first West Sussex winner!  However, defending champion Lloyd Jarvis must be seen as the man to beat, although he has slimmed down since last year and this might affect him! Whilst some of the events are very similar to previous years we have again tried to bring in some variety and to continue to also make some of the events even heavier and more challenging.

The South Downs Strongman Challenge is an officially sanctioned event for members of the I.A.W.A (UK) Strongman Division. I.A.W.A. (UK) is the United Kingdom body, affiliated to the International All-round Weight-lifting Association.  Our event takes place against the background of the Associations’ total and unequivocal commitment to a policy of rigorous drug control and we will be carrying out drug test on the day.  Unlike the strongman events seen on TV, all the competitors taking part are not on steroids or any other performance enhancing drugs and are only able to achieve these incredible feats of strength from years of hard training and dedication.  Indeed our commitment to drug free competition can be considered a major factor in encouraging people to travel such a long way to take part.

As you will see strongmen come in all shapes, sizes and ages, so if you fancy having a go or doing some training why not speak to Matt (with the brightly coloured hair!), speak to any other competitors, or visit the I.A.W.A website for more information www.iawa.homestead.com

If you have enjoyed this event why not visit the next I.A.W.A strongman event, where many of the guys will be competing again:

The Celtic Strongman Challenge, 28th August 2010,  St Just, Cornwall.
